EBERHARD SCHLOTTER: SOME BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS

1921
3rd June: Eberhard Schlotter is born in Hildesheim, Germany.
1928
Observes for the first time the etcher Karl Radler at work, fascinated by the precision of this art form. It was all so fascinating that I hardly dared breath... It was then that I, too, wanted to etch.
1929
Learns to draw under the strict supervision of his father, the sculptor and art professor, Heinrich Schlotter. Meets his father's friend, Kurt Switters.
1936-1937
Guest student of Wilhelm Maigatter at the College for Trade and Craft at Hildesheim. Produces his first etching "Hückedahl".
1939
First solo exhibition, Knockenhauer-Amtshaus, Hildesheim. Grant from the Friedrich Behrens Foundation, Hannover. Studies at the Academy of Fine Art in Munich. Rents a studio. "I just wanted to be a painter.  My childhood had been full of happiness... behind me lay my youth, overshadowed by the rapid march and  order of an evil force.". The Second World War breaks out.
1944
Marries Dorothea von der Leyen.
1945
Establishes himself as an artist in Darmstadt.
1946
First solo exhibition after the war, at the Felix Dörffel Art Agency, Darmstadt.
1947
A daughter Sibylle, is born, today a photographer. Friendship with Kasimir Edschmid.
1949
Exhibition "Oil paintings, watercolours" at Amerikahaus, Darmstadt. Correspondence with Max Beckmann.
1951
Produces frescoes at the Victoria School, Darmstadt. Exhibition with the New Darmstadt Secession at the Mathildenhöhe: "Man’s Present Image".
1952-1953
First visit to Spain. Produces murals for public and private centres in Germany. Visits Picasso and Matisse in Vallauris in Vence. The Ströher Prize for Contemporary Art.
1954
Visits the Near East. Second visit to Spain. The discovery of Altea. Exhibition with the New Darmstadt Secession in Vienna. Pro-Art Prize.
1955
President of the New Darmstadt Secession. The writer Ernst Kreuder informs Schlotter of the dangerous situation in which Amo Schmidt finds himself, living in Kassel, near Saarburg, where he is threatened with prosecution for blasphemy and pornography. Schlotter succeeds in relocating the Schmidt family to Darmstadt and this is the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
1956
Journey to Paris. Journey to Spain. Leaves Germany. Buys an old house on the beach at Cap Negret, Altea. Travels through Spain. From his experience of the south emerges a series of paintings "The Butcher’s Family", a series he will come back to and complete in the 1980s.
1957
Gives up the presidency of the New Darmstadt Secession and leaves the group together with Arno Schmidt.
1958
First solo exhibition in Spain, the Fé Gallery, Madrid. Visits the painter Joan Miró. Meets the painter Antoni Tapies. Begins a friendship with Oskar Kokoschka.
1960
Exhibition "Oil Paintings, Watercolours, Drawings and Graphics" (the so-called Spanish Harvest) at the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt. Prepares for his return to Germany.
1961
Friendship with Otto Dix. Friendship with Ludwig Meidner.
1962
Exhibition "Paintings-Graphics" at the Klihm Gallery,Munich. Exhibition "Paintings-Graphics" at the Salve Hospes House in Braunschweig.
1963
A series of experiments result in the first etchings produced by using a technique he had developed himself: the technique of "soft aquantint etching".
1964
Father dies. "During the last years of his life my father would go out alone and with great pleasure into the countryside surrounding Bargfeld to sketch and to paint watercolours. He visited us in Spain and drew and painted there. He had rediscovered the joy of living. The hours and days we spent with him were full of calm happiness. His criticism on fine arts had softened" The future German Chancellor, Willi Brandt, Mayor of Berlin, commissions a portrait of the architect Walter Gropius. Friendship and correspondence with him.
1966
Exhibition: "Max Klinger/Eberhard Schlotter, Etchings", the Museum of Art, Darmstadt. Paints the series "Los Alimentos".
1967
The Joseph E Drexel Prize, Nurenberg. Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
1968
Paintings of distorting mirror images.
1971
The Heinrich Merck Honour. Darmstadt Art Prize. Participates in the exhibition Homage to Albrecht Dürer at the National Germanic Museum in Nurenberg.
1976
Travels to the Caribbean: Trinidad, Tobago and Dominica.
1977-1981
Produces etchings for Cervante’s Don Quixote, with text by writer and future Nobel Prize for Literature winner, Camilo José Cela.
1978
Travels to Sri Lanka. Exhibition Etchings 1936-1978, the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt.
1979
Death of Arno Schmidt in Celle. Member of the Italian Academy. Gold Medal.
1980
Professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz.
1981
Exhibition: "Oils, Drawings, Etchings" in the "Roemer und Pelizaeus" Hildesheim Museum.
1982
Exhibition "Don Quixote" at the Kreisler II Gallery, Madrid, the Gutenberg Museum and the Mittelrheinischen Landesmuseum in Mainz. Member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.
1983
Donation to the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid of all the etching plates for "Don Quixote" and one original set of etchings.
1984
Journey to South America. Visits the painter Guayasamín. Exhibition "Etchings by Eberhard Schlotter: 1938-1984", the National Library, Madrid. Meets the writer Luis Borges. Etchings for Goethe’s "Faust".

Etchings of Christopher Colombus with texts by the Historian and Academic Juan Pérez de Tudela.

Guest Professor at the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. Travels to the Caribbean and the Amazon.

The Prize of Honour, Villa Massimo in Rome.
1993
The Eberhard Schlotter Foundation of Celle, near Hannover, is formed. Presented with the Medal of Honour of Federal Germany. Death of wife after a long illness. Journey to Peru.
1995-1996
Journey to Peru and the Isle of Pascua."Slowly the colour seems to return to my paintings. The little light that remains to us is to love".

The Eberhard Schlotter Foundation in Altea is formed.

Exhibition "Arquipintura 1997-2006, 137 works produced between 1997 and 2006", the Eberhard Schlotter Foundation at the Bomann Museum of Celle, near Hannover, inaugurated on 24th February by the German Government Minister for Families, Doctor Ursula von de Leyen. Inauguration on 27th April of the permanent exhibition of 160 etchings of Eberhard Schlotter’s ‘Don Quixote’, belonging to the Alvarez Viña Foundation, in the Centro Integral Municipal Library El Llano in Gijón. Member of Honour of the Alvarez Viña Foundation of the Principality of Asturias.
